One doesn’t typically think of “island life” when thinking about Portland, Maine, but island life is absolutely an option offered due to several offshore islands only a short ferry ride away. One of the closest and most inhabited island is Peaks Island, which is actually a neighborhood within the city of Portland. Once referred to as the Coney Island of Maine and the recipient of numerous daily ferry departures, it can assume a pretty lively atmosphere in the summer time, but reverts back to its sleepy coastal village feel in the off-season.
