Nestled on the eastern tip of Portland’s peninsula is Munjoy Hill. What was once a somewhat seedy area that most longtime residents avoided and are still quick to remind you of its dramatic transformation with an “I remember….” has now become an incredibly desirable neighborhood. Anchored by the Eastern Promenade and its wide open grassy areas perched above Casco Bay, neighborhood eateries and boutiques now line Congress Street and are responsible for an ever evolving streetscape.
In addition to a burgeoning restaurant scene, new development has also taken root in the East End (more so than other areas on the peninsula) as developers race to convert turn-of-the-century buildings into beautifully appointed condos alongside ground up construction assuming a much more contemporary aesthetic. Granted there’s grumbling from seasoned locals on the gentrification that’s taking place, but most developers appear to balance the need for new high-end housing with the character and identity of the existing community.
